In this workshop I’ll share my passion for forming pieces for atmospheric kilns. Showing some of my favorite clay forming techniques, (coil and throw additions, faceting, and cutting feet), I'll demonstrate a technique I’ve personalized for making a lidded jar.

Interwoven with the forming of clay is the birth and life of ideas, creation of personal meaning, of community and world.  As an artist/potter I work and play with these concerns using tools of metaphor, analogy, and critical thought.

How do we move work and ideas forward?  What touchstones provide insight and perspective for ceramic artists?  How do we connect deeply to both the larger human story, and our contemporary context.  I’ll share how histories, myths, and traditions all inform and root my personal studio practice and fill a reservoir from which to draw.

You Will Learn:

  1. Technique to make an enclosed form become a lidded jar on a potters wheel.
  2. How to fit slips to clays and utilize crackle slips for bisque and green-ware.
  3. Ways for listening to, learning from and moving forward with your work.
