This is a workshop demonstrating how to create a robot monster that includes added metal parts. James will show how he works through the initial creative process of designing and sketching a monster that incorporates found metal objects. He'll show his slab and sculptural techniques for building a vessel and also demonstrate specific monster making skills. This workshop will explain how to calculate the fitting of metal parts with consideration of clay shrinkage and also how to adhere those parts after the firings.
You Will Learn:
Learn design and sketching techniques
Learn slap and sculptural clay building techniques
Learn techniques for combining metal parts, including calculating clay shrinkage and adhesives
Materials Needed:
Clay - James uses Timberline Sculptural, cone 6, and White Salmon with grog, cone 6
Clay sculpting tools
Clay slicing wire tool or fishing line
Ruler or tape measure
Water dish with clay added to make slip
Ware boards or a porous work surface - James uses Hardie-Boards the size of my table tops
Sketch pad and pencil
Found metal objects such as engine gears, faucet handles, camera lenses...
Two-part epoxy - James uses PC-7 because it's black
