Workshop and Meeting at Brenda Scotts Farm.

    Workshop Details:
Long time Georgies staff member Stephanie has a masterful way of using mid-range Georgies glazes. Here's your chance to ask questions and find out how she achieves those lovely surfaces that inspire and intrigue. We will provide mid-range test tiles, pigments, glazes and everything you need to try out new techniques. All you need to bring is something to carry your test tiles home, to be fired in your own kiln. (You may also bring your own mid-range test tiles, if you prefer.)

    Pit-Fire Information

Dates: Preparation, loading, and firing - Saturday, September 15, 2018 - 2:00-9:00pm.  In addition to having an open pit, we will also be firing in barrels which will be opened on the same day.

Dig out and display (the morning of the OPA picnic) - Sunday, September 16, 2018 - About 9-10am.

Location of Pit-Fire:  Brenda Scott’s farm, 25251 SE Bohna Park Rd, Damascus, OR 97089

Camping:  Long drive?  Overnight camping is available.  There’s a very nice bathroom in the garden.  Bring your own camping supplies.  No dogs please.

Pit-fire Registration: Participants must register by Monday, August 20.  Free to attend. Space is limited.  Priority will be in order of registration.  Contact Julie Asbury to register - jasbury@ipns.com.  Please include name, phone number, email address, and if you plan to camp overnight.

Size & Number: Pieces should not be less than 3" or more than 9" in any direction.  Space may be limited in the pit.  Very small pieces are easy to lose and large pieces are more prone to cracking.  There is no limit to what each participant can bring.  The pit will be loaded with one piece from each participant and then another from each until the pit is full.  Pieces must be bisque fired.

Clay: Formulas containing fire clay work best.  Porcelain and low fire clays are especially prone to cracking.  White clay tends to have more pink tones while darker clays tend to have more orange.

Form: Pieces will not be vitreous or hold liquid.  Avoid forms that would normally be used for liquids or design them in a way it’s obvious they won’t hold liquid.  Pieces will settle in the pit during the firing so avoid thin or delicate forms.

Surface: Smooth surfaces usually work best.  Burnishing or using slip and polishing the surface will create a shine but may chip off in the firing.  Sanding the surface with 220 and then 600 wet/dry sand paper after the bisque firing creates a smooth satin surface.  After the firing, the surface needs to be cleaned and sealed.

Decoration: Regardless of the preparation, no two pieces look alike.  Vapors from salt, oxides, and metal wire or screen create color and patterns.  Additional patterns can also be created using a masking slip or by wrapping pieces with flammable materials infused with salt and oxides.

Materials for wrapping pieces will be provided at the firing.  If you prefer to prepare your pieces in advance, more detailed information with formulas and instructions will be distributed to those who register.

If you can donate clean untreated wood, sawdust, or planer chips, please let us know when you register.
