PANEL PRESENTATION @ 7:30pm
The OPA welcomes special guest Dr Maribeth Graybill for our January General Meeting Panel Presentation:
The Enduring Vitality of Ceramics in Japan

Maribeth Graybill, PhD is the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Asian art at the Portland Art Museum. Previous to Maribeth's arrival to Portland in 2007,Dr. Graybill served as Senior Curator of Asian art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art,and taught Japanese and Asian art at UC Berkeley and Swarthmore College.

Among the great ceramic traditions of the world, the Japanese alone sustain a thriving studio potter industry on a grand scale. It is often said that more than 10,000 Japanese potters make a living crafting ceramics. Most of these are craftsmen designing wares for everyday life or for the tea ceremony.  Whether made from rough, unglazed stoneware or refined porcelain, these intimately scaled art works are an indispensable part of Japanese rituals of dining and hospitality. The high demand of domestic consumers for functional vessels – while somewhat diminished from the recent past – underlies the commercial success of Japanese studio ceramics. By contrast, artists working in more experimental forms find their principal audience in museums in Japan and abroad and private collectors in the West. The Portland Art Museum has amassed a significant collection of Japanese ceramics dating from the 1950s to the present day. This talk will touch briefly on historical trends that have dramatically changed clay art in Japan since the Pacific war and explore the wide range of aesthetics and techniques flourishing today.

Dr. Graybill will accompany her talk with images from the Museum collection.

Please join us for this exciting talk on January 20,2017 at 7:30 pm in the MAC main auditorium.

6:30pm: potluck + meeting; Multnomah Art Center - Auditorium,doors open @ 6:00pm!
